DENVER (AP) The Colorado Rockies have placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the 10-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain.

The Rockies also announced that outfielder Gerardo Parra has dropped his appeal and began serving a four-game suspension Sunday for his part in a bench-clearing brawl against San Diego on April 11.

Gonzalez was injured diving for a ball in right field in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, and the roster move was retroactive to Thursday.

Manager Bud Black says Gonzalez is able to hit but he is limited running the bases and cannot play defense.

"CarGo is available to pinch hit, can give us an at-bat but we probably would've had to run for him," Black said before Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs. "He hasn't played for three days, so he'll miss the next seven. You want players back at full strength and we think he should be back at full strength when his time is up."

Gonzalez is hitting .235 with three home runs. He agreed to a $5 million, one-year contract with Colorado on March 12.

Colorado also optioned outfielder Mike Tauchman to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday and recalled outfielders David Dahl and Noel Cuevas from the Isotopes.

Colorado cannot add another player for Parra, so even though Gonzalez was improving the Rockies needed to bolster their bench.

"He was getting better, but I think probably the thing that put us over the top was with Parra's suspension starting today and CarGo not 100 percent, we really maybe would've been down to 23 players," Black said.

Dahl hit .315 with seven home runs in 63 games in 2016 but missed last season because of a stress reaction in his ribcage. He is making his season debut in left field against the Cubs on Sunday.

Cuevas, 26, made his major league debut in right field and batted eighth against Chicago. Cuevas has a .227 average with 53 home runs in parts of nine seasons in the minor leagues.
